Tradition and culture
The summer months in Extremadura fill the calendar with festivities which recover its historical past.
In Extremadura each summer, there are a great number of very interesting cultural, artistic and traditional competitions, festivals and events which should not be missed. Testimony to this fact is that most of them have been declared Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
Some of the most important events are: the Mérida Classical Theatre Festival, which is held in the city's Roman Theatre; the festivity of Los Conversos (The Converts), a programme in memory of the Jewish legacy, in Hervás; the Festival Templario de Jerez de los Caballeros, recapturing the city's historic past; and the Festival of Martes Mayor in Plasencia.
But there are many more festivals during the summer months for you to enjoy during your holidays in Extremadura, for instance, the Alcántara Classical Theatre Festival, held in the Carlos V Gallery in the Convent of San Benito de Alcántara; the Sierra International Festival, Festivity of National Tourist Interest, which takes place in Fregenal de la Sierra; the Alburquerque Medieval Festival, held in the Luna castle and the Gothic-Jewish quarter.
And if can still manage some more, we recommend the Enramá de Pinofranqueado, the Day of the Tench, the Capeas in Segura de León and the Bulls of San Juan, in Coria.
To put a finishing touch to your tour through the festivities of Extremadura, you should see a theatre play: El Alcalde de Zalamea (The Mayor of Zalamea) in the town of Zalamea de la Serena in Badajoz, which has been declared a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
