The celebration of Spring and Holy Week are the starting signal for a season full of celebrations in the lands of Extremadura.
Several Festivities of Tourist Interest mark a season of light and colour during which Extremadura shines the most.
With the arrival of Spring, Extremadura experiences an explosion of colour, which ranges from green to the purest white, and changes the face of the countryside. The outstanding event during this change is the blooming of over a million cherry trees in the Valle del Jerte, which happens at the end of the month of March. A unique spectacle that you cannot miss, and that you can complete with a visit to the Monfragüe National Park and the Cáceres Bird Festival (in May), where you can enjoy the ornithological richness of this World Heritage city.
With Spring, festivities and traditions that are full of symbolism also come to Extremadura. An example of that is the celebration at the beginning of May of the Santa Cruz festival (in Feria, Badajoz); continuing mid-month with the Batalla de la Albuera, an historical reenactment of the battle that the inhabitants of this town fought against Napoleonic troops; in June you can travel to the XIX with the Literary Route of Romanticism in Almendralejo. Likewise, the National Cheese Festival in Trujillo, where you can discover a large variety of cheeses made in Extremadura, amongst which its famous Torta del Casar and the La Serena cheese stand out; and La Chanfaina, which is held in Fuente de Cantos (Badajoz) on the last Sunday in April, along with the Iberian Ham Fair in Jerez de los Caballeros (also in the province of Badajoz).
But if there is truly a festivity that arouses passions and is experienced intensely in Extremadura, that is Holy Week. Proof of it is Holy Week in Cáceres, declared a Festivity of International Tourist Interest; Holy Week in Mérida, where an impressive Via Crucis is performed in the Roman amphitheatre, which has earned it acknowledgement as a Festivity of Tourist Interest National; the Living Passion in Oliva de la Frontera and Los Empalaos in Valverde de la Vera, both declared Festivities of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
