Pure passion

The attractions of Passion Week in Extremadura are widely acclaimed and recognised both nationally and internationally.

One of the festivities arousing great passion and lived with intensity in Extremadura is Easter (Holy Week). A fine example of this is the Cáceres Holy Week, highlighting Way of the Cross of the Black Christ through the city centre streets, whose sobriety and tradition have earned it the title of Fiesta of International Tourist Interest; as well as Mérida Holy Week, when an imposing Way of the Cross is staged in the Roman Amphitheatre, one of the its many attractions.

Also, Holy Week in Badajoz and Holy Week in Jerez de los Caballeros, Fiestas of National Tourist Interest, are celebrated in cities that have beautiful statues in its churches.

The cities of Plasencia, Trujillo y Zafra can also boast some of the most important religious statues in Extremadura. This, together with the popular fervour, tradition and the beautiful historic and monumental town centres through which the processions parade, has earned them the designation of Fiestas of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.

In The Living Passion of Oliva de la Frontera, Fiesta of National Tourist Interest, the people of Oliva de la Frontera all become actors as they act out Christ's Passion thought their streets.

The Empalaos in Valverde de la Vera; as well as the Chíviri, in Trujillo; La Carrerita, in Villanueva de la Serena; the Piedraescrita pilgrimage, in Campanario; and the Día de la Luz, in Arroyo de la Luz; all these festivities declared of Tourist Interest in Extremadura, round off the region’s most outstanding Holy Week events.
