- Puente de Alcántara para Mejor Rincón 2014
Winner of the Guía Repsol 2014 Best Hidden Corner of Spain Award.
The Alcántara Bridge was awarded this prize due to its unique nature, its good preservation status and its natural environment.
This impressive architectural masterpiece of the Roman Empire, built in the 2nd century a.D., commissioned by Gaius Iulius Lacer, stretches over the Tagus river. It is 194 metres long and 8 metres wide and is supported by pillars that form six perfect arches, standing 71 m above the river. The Alcántara Bridge shows the three qualities required at the time for all constructions of this relevance: robustness, utility and beauty. An evidence of this is the inscription on the bridge that reads: Pontem perpetui masvrvm in secula mundi (This bridge shall stand for as long as the world turns).
Extremadura has once again led the contest organized by the Guía Repsol, that aims to shed lights on spots of a great heritage and natural interest. This year, this Roman engineering masterpiece has been recognized as the Best Hidden Corner of Spain.
This contest has been held for the last three years. Its first edition was won by another beautiful monument in Extremadura, the Church of Magdalena in Olivenza, and in the second edition the Jewish Quarter of Hervás came second.
We invite visitors to discover this spot included in the destination Tagus International and its natural, gastronomic and monumental assets.
