Art and Nature

The Natural Monument of Los Barruecos scooped the 2015 Best Hidden Corner of Spain Award in the Guía Repsol contest.

Hundreds of rocks dominate the landscape of this space located in Malpartida de Cáceres. It's a spectacular natural creation with rocks that appear to be true sculptures, while the nearby ponds that surround the granite boulders are home to a wide range of species, such as Anatidae, grey herons, booted eagles, Montagu's harriers, otters, salamanders and, above, all, common stork, a species that has found that these rock formations are an ideal nesting place, forming one of its most important colonies in Europe and an iconic image of Los Barruecos.

This is an unique place, recognized as a Natural Monument for its geological and ecological relevance, and also for housing the avant-garde works of the Vostell-Malpartida Museum, which give the area an unparalleled charm; discover the collection of the German artist Wolf Vostell, a prominent figure in the Fluxus movement, and walk several routes designed to make you feel the essence of the unique landscape of Los Barruecos.

The Best Hidden Corner in Spain Award has been awarded for the last four years. The first edition of this national contest was won by another beautiful spot in Extremadura: the Church of Magdalena in Olivenza. In the second edition, the Jewish quarter of Hervás finished second, and, in 2014, the Alcántara Bridge bagged the award.
