Fundación Triángulo and the Regional Government work closely together to promote and position Extremadura as a LGBTI tourism destination under the trademark Extremadura Amable. One of the most visible outcomes of this initiatives is that it has been joined by many companies and establishments committed to respect equal rights and diversity.

In your tour of Extremadura, you will find hotels, rural cottages, SPAs, restaurants and bars that have joined this tourist network and are proud to declare themselves LGBTI-friendly establishments.

Extremadura Amable is not a hollow trademark; it reflects the actual situation of a landlocked area which, despite old stereotypes, is respectful of all gender and sexual identities, and not only in the bigger cities but also in the tiniest villages.

Here you will find forms to relax, have fun, and enjoy culture and history.

Did you know that Extremadura has over 50 protected spaces, including the Monfragüe National Park, the Tagus International Natural Park and the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark? Extremadura is a reference in terms of nature and active tourism, a true paradise for photographers, bird-watchers and stargazers.

Did you know that Extremadura has three World Heritage Sites: Cáceres, Mérida and the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe? Beside these three gems, there are dozens of cities and villages with pretty old towns (Badajoz, Plasencia, Trujillo, Hervás, Coria, Valencia de Alcántara, Zafra, Olivenza, Alburquerque, Jerez de los Caballeros, Llerena, Azuaga…) and monumental traces of all the peoples that have lived here: Romans, Visigoths, Jews, Arabs, Christians...

Not to mention the typical Extremadura cuisine, full of monastic and pastoralistic influences. The region is one of Spain’s leading production region, including products such as acorn-fed Iberian ham and other cured meats, lamb and beef, sheep and goat cheeses, extra virgin olive oil, honey, fruit and vegetables, and La Vera pimentón, the local paprika, which are the base of traditional and innovative recipes by local cooks.

Contrary to old stereotypes, Extremadura organizes world-renowned cultural and entertainment events including the International Festival of Classical Theatre of Mérida (July-August), which is one of the most important of its kind in Europe, the Womad Festival in Cáceres (May), the Festival of Classical Theatre (August) or the Carnival of Badajoz, one of the funniest and most popular in Spain. Its museums, including the National Museum of Roman Art of Mérida (MNAR, as per its Spanish acronym), the Vostell Malpartida, the Centre for Visual Arts Fundación Helga de Alvear and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Extremadura and Latin America (MEIAC as per its Spanish acronym) are well worth a visit.

The programme of events for (not exclusively) LGTBI public, Extremadura has gained a leading role thanks to the party of Los Palomos, organized by Fundación Triángulo, in collaboration with several public entities, which is held in Badajoz every June since 2011. Concerts, LGTBI-themed cakes and tapas routes, theatre and cinema are some of the activities that each year attract thousands of visitors, many of them from all over the country.

Other important events in Extremadura are the FanCineGay, an International Festival of LGTBI movies, held each November for more than 20 years, with short and feature films shown in several tons of Extremadura, and the Tomás Bravo National Drag Queen Contest held during the Roman Carnival in Mérida.
