You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes or Harry Houdini to have some fun with friends, family or work colleagues at an escape room.

Basically, escape rooms are challenges where participants have to “escape” from a room or complete a mission within a certain time (60 minutes). To do that, they must solve a series of puzzles and riddles that Agatha Christie would be proud of, find clues in hidden places and overcome tests that require brains over brawn in an enclosed space.

Any form of decoration to inspire mystery, intrigue and adventure is valid for the ambience of an escape room: prisons, medieval dungeons, haunted houses with witches and zombies, laboratories, hospitals, crime scenes or kidnappings or spaceships. But more important than the ambience, the users value the originality, logic, difficulty and development of the plot, as well as the involvement, instructions and friendliness of the organisers or “game masters”.

Extremadura has escape rooms in Badajoz, Cáceres, Mérida, Don Benito, Higuera la Real, Zafra, Almendralejo, Castuera and Puebla de la Calzada where entrepreneurs have joined this global phenomenon that is producing a new type of tourism. Avid “escapists” love to try different experiences and travel from city to city to discover new venues or just take advantage of their stay in a place to engage in their favourite pastime. As well as visiting a museum, enjoying local gastronomy, taking a walk through the historic centre or taking in a concert, more and more tourists are visiting escape rooms on a getaway.

There are websites to help locate escape rooms all over the world and even the major hotel, restaurant and flight search sites include information on these new activities, with thousands of user reviews.

Most of these rooms require customers to be aged 15 or over, although there are also specialised rooms for children. The number of participants ranges from three to five and on a global level there is an enormous interest on the part of the companies, who see these group activities as the perfect team building activity as a way to foster collaboration in problem solving and incentivise workers.
