If you're a birdwatcher, you will love walking around this reservoir where you can spot different species of endangered birds.
According to experts, white storks gather in this SPA during the breeding season. Black storks, however, prefer to come to this habitat during the post-breeding season. So if you happen to pass by the La Serena reservoir at this time of year, you will be able to see large concentrations of these endangered birds. Another endangered species - the black tern - and the common crane are two other regular visitors to these waters where you can also find Iberian barbels, spined loaches and bogas (leporinus obtusidens).
In addition Mediterranean turtles are often found in these inland waters which cover the municipalities of Cabeza del Buey, Capilla, Casas de Don Pedro, Castuera, Esparragosa de la Serena, Garlitos, Monterrubio de la Serena, Peñalsordo, Puebla de Alcocer, Risco, Siruela, Sancti-Spiritus and Zarza-Capilla, all of them in the province of Badajoz.
