The wide diversity of habitats has led a large number of birds to settle around the reservoir.
This reservoir is used to irrigate the region and has a protected area of over seven thousand hectares, including the waters of the river Tagus as it passes through the corridor between Campo Arañuelo and the Ibores-Villuercas mountain range. This natural space is occupied mainly by forest areas of oaks and holm-oaks and Mediterranean scrubland which have attracted a wide range of birds who nest here.
No wonder, then, that this area is so interesting, given the diversity of habitats found in it which are the home of four species of fish and one mammal, the otter. It is also inhabited by a host of birds, like the Spanish imperial eagle, the golden eagle, the griffon vulture and the Egyptian vulture. This reservoir is used by a fair number of wintering birds, too, like the common crane and diverse aquatic birds.
The main objectives of this SPA in the province of Cáceres, which occupies the municipalities of Valdelacasa de Tajo, Almaraz, Belvís de Monroy, Valdehúncar, El Gordo, Peraleda de la Mata, Villar de Pedroso, Berrocalejo, Campillo de Deleitosa and Fresnedoso de Ibor are to protect the bird species that inhabit it and promote environmental education and research.
