Valdeobispo enjoys a unique location in the heart of a spectacular valley and has played a major role throughout history, as revealed by its rich heritage.
The Cáceres municipality of Valdeobispo is a magnificent example of Mediterranean dehesa pastureland teeming with holm-oaks, cork trees, oak trees, broom, rockrose and olive trees, watered by the Alagón river which creates a natural border. It is a veritable paradise for bird watching. So if you enjoy ornithology, be sure to visit the habitats of the red avadavat, the black stork and the Egyptian vulture.
Visitors to the town can enjoy a stroll through its maze of narrow streets and its livestock trails, which date back to the 11th century during the Christian reconquest, in which the town played a key role due to its location in the heart of a valley that runs from León to Andalusia.
This also explains the area's superb religious heritage, most notably the old church of San Pedro Apóstol, the new church and the chapels of Nuestra Señora de Valverde, El Cristo del Amparo and El Humilladero.
The best time to visit these monuments is during some of Valdeobispo's many festivities, such as La Vaca Pendona, the Nuestra Señora de Valverde procession, La Maya, San Roque el Chico and San Roque el Grande, allowing you to fully appreciate the town's age-old traditions and try some of the local dishes, such as tomato soup, broad bean soup, potato soup, Ajo de Patatas (fried potatoes with garlic), Gazpacho de Verano (summer gazpacho) and Frite de Matanza (a pork and red pepper dish). -
