A place dedicated to culture and literature, Almendralejo is known as the City of Romanticism.
Carolina Coronado, one of the greatest female writers of Spanish Romanticism, was born here and now receives due recognition. The theatre that is named after her was opened in 1916, following the idea of an “Italian theatre”, with a pioneering style in the region. Iron was used to build and decorate it, and practically introduces the Modernist style in Extremadura. Its colourful windows and other decorative items give us an idea of what Carolina Coronado Theatre used to look like.
Like many others at the time, this theatre was built to meet the needs of the increasing wealth and prosperity of society in Extremadura, as they demanded more leisure and culture options.
Nowadays we can enjoy plays again, it was a cinema for a period, and sit in stalls and boxes that look similar to those used by the people of Extremadura in the early 20th century, when they used to come to Carolina Coronado Theatre.
