This municipality in Cáceres, holding the Cultural Heritage Site designation, has its own language and boasts many monuments.
It is thought that this municipality in the province of Cáceres, situated in Sierra de Gata Mountains, between Las Hurdes and the border with Portugal, was founded approximately in the 4th century.
Many bloody battles have been fought in this area, like the one in 1142, when King Alfonso VII took the city of Coria. His son Fernando brought people from the old kingdoms of León and Galicia to repopulate the area. The interesting language spoken in the valley – “A Fala” or “Mañegu” – is thought to have started here. Thanks to its history and well-preserved architecture, San Martín de Trevejo has been awarded the Cultural Heritage Site designation.
There are many monuments in this municipality, such as the Parish Church of San Martín de Tours, the bell tower in the Plaza Mayor square, the Convent of San Miguel, various mansions in the old quarter, the Shrine of La Cruz Bendita, the porticoed Plaza Mayor square and its fountain in the centre, the funerary stelae from the late Bronze Age, huts scattered all over the district, and the old 12th century olive-oil mill.
The town's festivity calendar also includes important historical events, such as the festival in honour of San Martín de Tours on 11-12 November, the Cruz del Emigrante festival and the Vera Cruz Day. -
