This building in Trujillo, built on an ancient Visigothic fortress, bears the name of the family that owns it – the Dukes of San Carlos.

It is made entirely of ashlar blocks. The exterior of the building, specifically one of the main doors, has Renaissance decorations with Ionic columns. Another of its sides has four storeys. The first one boasts an arcade and a balcony on the corner, crowned by an eagle. This privilege was granted by Charles V to thank the family for their support when he became an emperor.

Inside we find a classical central courtyard with Tuscan columns. The building also has a well, a cellar and sculpted granite chimneys. It is all connected by curious spiral staircases.

The building has now been refurbished to house the convent of the Order of St Jerome.
