You can still see the perfect structure and layout of this Roman military camp, known as Castra Caecilia, situated in the city of Cáceres.
Very close to the urban area in Cáceres lies the site known as Castra Caecilia or Cáceres el Viejo – a Roman camp built in the second decade of the 1st century BC. This archaeological site is important because of the quality of its defensive facilities and the inner complex made up of rooms.
The camp's floor plan is an almost perfect rectangle, and is made up of a solid wall that is 4 metres thick, surrounded by a double ditch dug out of the rock. Many excavations have taken place since it was discovered and they have unearthed four open doors on the defensive walls.
The layout can still be observed perfectly – for example, it has several streets such as the Via Quintana and the Via Principalis. Unfortunately, there are not many documents preserved that tell us which were the rooms used by the troops. It is thought that they stayed in tents. -
