Located 1,175 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Tormantos mountains, Piornal is the highest town in Extremadura.
During your stay in Piornal, be sure to visit the remains of Bishop Acebedo's palace, San Juan Bautista church and La Concepción chapel. And don't miss the polychromatic 17th century wooden statue of the Virgin Mary known as La Virgen de la Concepción.
Enjoy a pleasant stroll through the town and discover its traditional architecture, a viewpoint boasting fabulous views of the valley, an ancient natural stone slide known as “La Lancha Resbaladera” (The Slippery Slab) and typical plazas such as Plaza de España, Plaza de la Iglesia or Plaza del Palacio.
Set amid a sea of chestnut and cherry trees, Piornal boasts spectacular landscapes that are blanketed in snow during the winter and spring. Nature lovers can explore some of the area's many trails, such as the La Serrana de La Vera cave trail or the Trail of Springs.
Piornal also has a rich culinary heritage, including a wide variety of local dishes such as "caldo piornalego" (Piornal broth), "migas piornalegas" (fried breadcrumbs with chopped bacon and pork, chorizo etc), "patatas revolcás" (a tasty potato dish) or, of course, the area's fabulous cured hams and sausage. -
