Inside it, you will find one of the most beautiful Gothic altarpieces in Extremadura.
Located in the urban area of Calzadilla de los Barros, the El Salvador parish church is one of the compulsory visits in this town. The church itself is extremely beautiful, which is why it was granted the title of Cultural Heritage Site. But furthermore, its main altarpiece, a masterpiece and the only one that remains by Antón de Madrid, is also considered cultural heritage
This altarpiece is one of the few Gothic specimens conserved in Extremadura. Created between the 16th and 17th century, with 28 panels dedicated to the life of Christ and His mother. On your visit, you will also be amazed by the beauty of the Mudéjar door.
If we focus on the church, we have to highlight its rectangular ground plan with a nave divided into five sections. Blocks of stone were used inside but the outside is masonry with brick buttresses.
For the sake of curiosity, take a look at the apse - as it looks like it is more from a military building than a religious one, maybe because it is topped with battlements, which make it look very like a fortress.
Inside, besides the main altarpiece, it is worth mentioning the vault of the choir loft, on whose central keystone, you will discover the cross of Santiago over a raging lion.
