Discover the strange stories and unique historic moments hidden behind the walls of this castle with stunning views.
The most well-known and visited monument in the Monfragüe National Park is the amazing castle, since you get an indescribable panoramic view from its keep.
Even though the Romans had already discovered its potential, it was in the Moslem period when the castle which we know today was begun. In those days the building consisted of a walled enclosure and five towers. During the 12th century the castle suffered many sieges and changed hands a number of times, which led to its rebuilding with fundamental changes to its features.
We should highlight the Trejo family, who rebuilt part of the castle to convert it into their own personal palace.
After the Spanish War of Succession the castle was abandoned and left in ruins, which is how it remained until the end of the 20th century when major restoration and rebuilding work took place, making it the castle it is today for us to enjoy.
Apart from the marvellous views from this impressive castle, you will also enjoy the legends which it keeps within its walls. -
