Cáceres is one of the few provinces in Spain which has more than one space classified by UNESCO as a Nature Reserve. In order to enjoy nature, historical heritage and cuisine of the towns of Monfragüe and Tagus International, every year since 2017, in November and December, a programme of activities is proposed for both children and adults.
The organizers of the Nature Reserve Months are well aware of the rich biodiversity of these of areas, and the highlight activities related to nature and active tourism, such as trekking, bike routes, birdwatching and stargazing. The activities proposed do not forget the area’s rich heritage and cuisine and propose from guided routes to monuments and historical centres to tasting of local products, mushroom gatherings and cooking workshops, among other initiatives.
Monfragüe is a part of the World Network of Nature Reserves since 2003. Its 116,160 hectares include the towns of Malpartida de Plasencia, Serradilla, Serrejón, Toril, Torrejón El Rubio, Casas de Miravete, Jaraicejo, Casas de Millán, Casatejada, Deleitosa, Higuera de Albalat, Mirabel, Romangordo and Saucedilla.
Monfragüe National Park is located within this Nature Reserve and stretches over 18,396 hectares, one of the best-preserved environments of Mediterranean forest in the Iberian Peninsula and the shelter of many endangered species of birds, such as Spanish imperial eagles, cinereous vultures, Eurasian eagle-owls and black storks, among others.
To the west of the province of Cáceres is the Tagus International, which was declared a Nature Reserve in 2016. It consists of a protected space which stretches over 428,176 hectares, of which 28,602 hectares are in Spain (comprising the municipalities of Alcántara, Brozas, Carbajo, Cedillo, Herrera de Alcántara, Herreruela, Mata de Alcántara, Membrío, Piedras Albas, Salorino, Santiago de Alcántara, Valencia de Alcántara, Villa del Rey and Zarza la Mayor) and 26.484 hectares in Portugal.
Like Monfragüe, this Nature Reserve has a great ornithological value. It is the home to Spanish imperial eagles, cinereous and griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and Bonelli’s eagles, among many other species.
This territory also includes the Tagus International Natural Park, which has 25,088 hectares on the Spanish side and 26,484 on the Portuguese side.
