The Badajoz Marathon was first run in the early nineties, and, after all this time, it has become one of the main races in Extremadura. The half marathon is a much more recent addition.
Both races are held on the same day in March and are organized by the Foundation for Sport Promotion fostered by the City Council. Both races start and finish in the Paseo Fluvial by the riverside. The marathon makes two tours around an entirely urban and mostly flat circuit (with altitude of between 168 and 178 metres), along some of the city’s main avenues reaching the banks of the Caya river, at which point the route makes a U-turn.
Participation has increased over recent years, as has the sporting level of athletes. Usually, several local comparsas (comedy musical acts) perform along the route to encourage athletes and entertain the crowds.
