La Serena and Sierras Periféricas SPA is in the province of Badajoz and is the largest protected space in Extremadura, and as such is home to a large number of species of birds, fish, reptiles and mammals.
This is the largest protected space in the region of Extremadura and one of the most interesting, too, due to the concentration of habitats you can find there. Half of the protected surface area is characterised by sub-steppes, but you can also enjoy the scenery of the Mediterranean holm-oak groves that cover a large part of the La Serena and Sierras Periféricas SPA.
This setting is the perfect habitat for the proliferation of fauna typical of open terrain, like the great bustard, the little bustard, the little kestrel, the Eurasian stone-curlew, the black-tailed and the pin-tailed sandgrouse and the Montagu's harrier. But for other species that nest in the surrounding mountains, like the black stork, the Bonelli's eagle, the golden eagle and the Egyptian vulture, as well as five species of fish, the Mediterranean turtle, the European pond turtle and the European otter.
