This beautiful Renaissance palace, built in Trujillo in the 16th century, was refurbished by Juan Pizarro, the explorer of Peru.
In the 16th century, Juan Pizarro decided to refurbish an old military building in Trujillo, belonging to the Vargas family, in order to turn it into a palace. Thus, the defensive building became a Renaissance stately palace.
From the outside you can see two rectangular towers, built in the 14th and 15th centuries. One of them has a Renaissance balcony. The main door, between the two towers, boasts a frieze decorated with hawthorn and the family's coat of arms on the tympanum.
Inside, we find a courtyard with a balustrade and the weapons of the Orellana and Pizarro families. Like the other palatial buildings, it also has wells and a spiral staircase.
In the mid-20th century this old stately palace became a place for education: the Sagrado Corazón School's mother house.
An interesting fact is that the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes stayed here. In fact, his time in Trujillo features in his last novel. -
