Lesser kestrels come here above all during breeding season
As one can deduce from its name, the SPA (Special Protection Area for birds) is located in Jerez de los Caballeros, in the province of Badajoz. And naturally, the most relevant bird species in this area is the lesser kestrel. They gather here forming large concentrations, especially during the breeding season.
This is one of the urban SPAs of Extremadura, inhabited mostly by specimens of this species, which are highly accustomed to living alongside humans and nest in the hollows in buildings, like the churches of San Bartolomé, Santa María de la Encarnacion, Santa Catalina and San Miguel, among other places in the town.

The most outstanding element of this Baroque church in Jerez de los Caballeros is its seventy-metre high tower. But inside it guards many other treasures, like carvings of the four evangelists.
