This monument is a part of the Valencia de Alcántara historic site. Its beauty lies both in the exterior and the interior, where there a great works of art which must be seen.
The beauty of the Gothic temple in Valencia de Alcántara led to its declaration as a monument of Historic and Artistic Interest. It is an integral part of the towns historic site.
Although there is no documentary evidence, it would appear that the Church of Nuestra Señora de Rocamador was built in the place where there had been an old Moslem mosque after the Hispano-Moslem conflict.
Years after the conversion from a mosque to a place of Christian worship, the primitive church was gradually adapted to the norms governing Catholic buildings. It was not until the mid-16th century that construction of the present temple began, it was completed during the 17th century.
The church consists of three naves and the base is rectangular. The most important elements of the exterior are the Neoclassical façade and the Herrerian tower.
Once inside you will be surprised by temple's artistic wealth. In addition to the various images, a painting attributed to Luis de Morales made on eight panels pieced together stands out from the others, as well as a polychrome sculpture of Christ by Berruguete and the altarpiece over the main altar.
It was in this temple that the wedding ceremony of Isabel, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, with Don Manuel el Afortunado, King of Portugal took place. This is commemorated each summer with a re-enactment of the Boda Regia or Royal Wedding. -
