  • Description

A dwelling from Roman times, built on the outskirts of Emerita Augusta, where luxury and comfort were not lacking.

A building constructed between the end of the 1st century and the start of the 2nd century A.D., outside Roman Mérida. Its name comes from the remains of the Mitra cult that were found near this dwelling.

The whole building, included within the archaeological ensemble of Mérida, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is built around three patios, the first with an entrance stairway and a pond for gathering water. Part of the building had a second floor from which only some stairs from the staircase that led to it remain.

The walls were decorated with paintings and mosaics. Nowadays, one remains in one room, the Cosmos, in which human figures, and earth, sea and sky elements are represented spinning around the figure of Eternity.

You can also see the ruins of an underground room where the owners of the dwelling found shelter from summer temperatures.

A little further away from the dwelling, we find some thermal baths, of which the brick arcade that the heat came from remain.
