The Virgin who watches over this chapel was crowned patron saint of La Serena.
Legend has it that the primitive image of the Virgin of Piedraescrita, archaic late Romance dated in the 13th century, was found hidden under a Roman tombstone with an epigraph saying "“Lucio Valerio: Son of Lucio Calígula Silvano Victor. Valeriano Victor." To this day this tombstone is still embedded in the south face of the temple. In fact, this is where its name comes from.
The hermitage is located a few kilometres from the town of Campanario in Badajoz, more exactly in a place known as "Los Barrancos". It is made of masonry and dressed stone with buttresses. The floor plan is an elongated rectangle and it has two porticos: one in the west wall and the other in the north wall. The apse was covered by a ribbed vault, today refurbished to accommodate the Baroque niche for the Virgin.
The temple was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1993 as a result of its artistic and cultural value. -
