Location and Contact:

  • This town in the south of Badajoz is full of churches and shrines, and is the birthplace of painter Francisco de Zurbarán.

On the Silver Route we come across the town of Fuente de Cantos, in the province of Badajoz. It is first mentioned in history in 1240, although the town probably existed before the Reconquest, with another name. Remains of its prehistoric past have been found in the Castillejos hills, from the Neolithic period and Roman times.

As well as historic monuments, Fuente de Cantos has many religious foundations, such as the Franciscan Concepción Convent, the Discalced Carmelites and the Convent of San Diego, as well as more than 20 shrines, of which only those dedicated to San Juan and La Hermosa can be visited today.

Fuente de Cantos also pays tribute to one of its most famous figures – painter Francisco de Zurbarán. You'll be able to find out about its culture if you come to its most typical festivities, such as La Chanfaina, or the San Isidro pilgrimage, both designated Festivities of Tourist Interest in Extremadura; the carnival, the San Juan festivity or the slaughtering class.
