The Badajoz Iberian Music Festival brings together great musicians of the most varied styles, be it classical, contemporary, medieval or jazz.
This festival, one of the oldest in Spain, takes place between May and June and has been held since 1973 (except for the periods 1979-1983 and 1986-1996). Its programme features a careful selection of content, a balance between well-known and new music, the participation of soloists and national and international groups, and the habitual presence of artists from Extremadura and Portugal.
In 1996 the Philharmonic Society of Badajoz took over the management and organisation of the festival, in collaboration with the Junta de Extremadura, the Provincial Government and Badajoz City Council, among other sponsors.
Concerts and conferences are held at various venues in Badajoz capital, for example Teatro López de Ayala and the Convention Centre, as well as in the streets and squares of the city and other towns and villages in the province.
The Iberian Music Festival also has a section dedicated to students and young performers ("Festival Joven"), which complements the programme offered by well-known artists and groups.

The Alcazaba (Arab Fortress), a spectacular view
The Alcazaba, or fortress, was the origin of the city, the dwelling of the Kings of the Taifa Kingdom and the defensive structure which made Badajoz a strategic fort to control the area's historical borders.
