This body of water is the second largest in the Iberian peninsular, and one of the largest in Europe
You must see the fabulous views of this reservoir, the second largest body of water in the Iberian Peninsula, holding 3.21 trillion litres of water, one of the largest in Europe. The reservoir opened in 1990 and is bordered by the districts of Cabeza del Buey, Capilla, Castuera and Peñalsordo in the La Serena region, and Esparragosa de Lares, Garlitos, Puebla de Alcocer, Risco, Sancti-Spíritus and Siruela in the La Siberia region.
It was built on the course of the Zújar river, one of the most irregular in Spain, resulting in a radical change in the area's landscape, changing it from an arid zone to an “inland sea”, with several kilometres of freshwater "coast" in the La Serena region.
