This dam is on the Arrocampo river in Cáceres province, close to where the river flows into the Tagus
The reservoir is between the Campo Arañuelo region and Monfragüe National Park. Unlike other dams, this one is not used to produce electricity or provide water for irrigation, but to provide cooling water for the turbines at the Almaraz nuclear power plant. As a result, the water level does not fluctuate as much as with other reservoirs, and its temperature is higher than normal.
These man-made conditions have made this an ideal home for special bird and animal life that is hard to see in most other interior parts of the peninsula, particularly birds.
The reservoir and its surrounding areas are part of the Arrocampo reservoir SPA, which belongs to the Red Natura 2000 nature network. There is an Ornithology Park in the nearby town of Saucedilla, where you can find out about birdwatching routes around the area.
