An enormous concrete dam holds back the water near Alange, close to Mérida
Built on the Matachel river, close to where it flows into the Guadiana river, the Alange reservoir looks stunning from the nearby town of the same name. It was built to provide irrigation for the nearby Guadiana "vega" farming area. The reservoir is home to carp, pike and black bass. If you enjoy fishing, you will be excited to learn that you can fish here with a licence.
And because it is so large, it is also perfect for watersports, such as sailing, canoeing and windsurfing.
Building the reservoir submerged some houses in the lower part of Alange and the parish of Los Pajares, so the inhabitants had to be relocated to a new neighbourhood built on the La Zarza road. The reservoir now embraces the outcrop on which the town is built, with its famous Roman spa and remains of its Alcazaba.
