Romans, Visigoths and Moors settled here and left their imprint on the architecture of Don Benito.
Situated in the Vegas Altas del Guadiana region, the town of Don Benito has a great variety of buildings thanks to different settlers over the centuries – Romans, Visigoths and Moors. But there is no documentary evidence of the name of Don Benito until the 15th century.
In the town centre we find the Plaza de España square, with the Town Hall and the majestic Church of Santiago Apóstol; the Church of San Sebastián, which is the oldest religious building in town; the Convent of the Discalced Carmelites; the Shrine of Las Cruces; the Chapel of Virgen de Guadalupe; the Imperial Theatre; the Ethnographic Museum; and the Casa de la Cultura, designed by Rafael Moneo.
But Don Benito has much more to offer – you can go hiking and discover the beauty of the Sierra de Ortiga Mountains.
However, if you really want to get to know Don Benito, you should come to its traditional festivities, where you can discover more about the people. These include the September Fair, "La Velá" and "Ruta del aperitivo" (Snack Route). The latter aims to help people get to know the local gastronomy, which includes typical dishes such as "ajo de calabaza" (pumpkin dish) and "ajo de peces" (fish), as well as sweets such as "roscas de piñonate", "gañotes enmelados", "pestiños" and the famous "bollas". -
