An altarpiece by Luis de Morales is the most highly-cherished treasure in this church in Arroyo de la Luz.
The church of La Asunción is seen as one of the supreme examples of Late Gothic. Because of this both the church and its main altarpiece were recognised as assets of cultural interest in 1981.
Of its three doorways, the main one, which is highly decorated in Manueline style, gives a busy sensation to the whole with fine, well-worked lines. The Portada del Sol, as it is known, which is believed to be the oldest doorway, may have belonged to a previous church. The north door, however, is in a better state of preservation.
On entering the church you will notice that it has a single nave, with tierceron and starred vaults. Without doubt the most outstanding ones are those of the sacristy, by the master masons Andrés and Rodrigo Alonso under the direction of the architects Luis and Hernando Moreno, and that of the chapel of San Andrés.
As we mentioned above, the main altarpiece is one of the most remarkable works in this church in Arroyo de la Luz, as it has 20 paintings on board by Luis de Morales "El Divino" between 1560 and 1563. These paintings are seen as Morales' masterpiece. Because this selection of boards is the largest collection by the artist conserved in the same place as when they were created, and as such are seen as a jewel of the Renaissance art of Extremadura.
