The streets and alleyways of this municipality in the province of Badajoz are steeped in history and tradition.
The municipality of Castuera, in the province of Badajoz, was founded between the 13th and 14th centuries as the Comarca de La Serena.
Its Roman remains prove that this area has been inhabited for centuries, although the Romans were not the only ones to leave their imprint on the municipality. We also find the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Buensuceso, the Palace of the Counts of Ayala, the turrón museum or old flour factory, Casa de La Serena and other mansions and ancestral homes that you can discover as you walk through the alleyways and squares, and in the typical Cerrillo neighbourhood.
Castuera's festivities are another of its treasures, which have been celebrated for centuries and are steeped in tradition. We have Las Candelarias, for example, when the locals gather in the countryside to eat typical cake, "regañas"; and the San Isidro pilgrimage.
You have to try Castuera's turrón (nougat), honey, and caramel-coated almonds, and, of course, "caldereta" stew (typical in Extremadura), and the famous egg "gazpacho". However, the most popular food in this municipality is the Serena cheese, creamy sheep's milk cheese that is highly appreciated and has won many awards.
After you have enjoyed the food, the best thing to do is to go for a long walk along one of the paths in the area. You can visit the Zújar reservoir, where there are many sports available, such as rafting or canoeing; or La Serena reservoir, in the north of the municipality. -
