An impressive building that belonged to the Templar Order and which, nowadays, has a bullring and a marketplace inside it.
At the highest part of the valley occupied by the city of Fregenal de la Sierra, we find this fortress that was built in the 13th century at the instructions of the Templar Order. A building that has undergone several remodellings and extensions, and which has seven towers and a walled courtyard. Three towers stand out amongst the most important towers: in the first place, the keep - the biggest and on which there is a bell tower with a clock; the second one is the Santa María tower; and the third is known as the gunpowder tower, and it is possibly where the fortress prison was located.
You can enter the building through a large gate with a pointed arch built in ashlar work. In the fortress courtyard, we find the bullring and the marketplace, and next to it are the Church of Santa María and the parish. -
