Location and Contact:

  • This town, which lies north of the city of Cáceres, is where the famous Torta del Casar cheese comes from.

In Casar de Cáceres you can enjoy the countryside and marvel at the amazing vegetation, and spot steppe birds such as little and great bustards, because part of the area is included in the Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes Special Protection Area for birds.

Many cultures have lived in this area: we find a Bronze Age fort and a pre-Roman funerary stele, which prove that these lands were inhabited by native people many centuries ago.

One of the trademarks of Casar de Cáceres is its Cheese Museum, where you can learn all about how the famous Torta de Casar is made. The way of making this cheese has been preserved for generations as a symbol of the identity of the locals. In the town you'll also find many cheese shops where you can enjoy the town's special and delicious gastronomy.

If you like architecture, you shouldn't miss the 16th century Gothic Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Also be sure to visit the four shrines situated in the town.

Like many other municipalities in Extremadura, a Roman road used to run through Casar. Today there are still remains of the Silver Route here.

Casar is also a place where pilgrims stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela, and here they find history, culture and good food.
