Nature lovers are in for a treat in Las Villuercas, which is also famous for its Designation of Origin wines.
Several cultures have left their mark on Cañamero ranging from cave paintings and implements from pre-historic times to Roman and Visigothic ruins and the heritage that has come down from the time of the Christian reconquest.
There is a centre for visitors in Cañamero, the Geoparque Villuercas-Ibores-Jara. The town is an ideal destination for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts, given that the surrounding woods are home to species of all kinds: wild boars, deer, roe deer, otters, griffon vultures and golden eagles. The area is perfect for going on walks and visiting particularly interesting spots such as the Cancho del Fresno reservoir, the riparian forest, the Ruecas river, the oak grove and the rocky formations.
What's more, Cañamero is also famous for its Ribera del Guadiana Designation of Origin wines. They are one of the main attractions of the town and something you must at least taste before you leave.
You should also have a look at the church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the chapel of Nuestra Señora de Belén representing as they do good examples of local religious architecture. Neither should the cave paintings preserved in the “Cueva de la Chiquita”, and others, be missed. -
