Located in the south of Badajoz, Calera de León is home to one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area: the monastery of Tentudía.
The two buildings of greatest interest in Calera de León are the "conventual santiaguista" a convent built in honour of Saint James in the town centre and the monastery of Tentudía in the mountains, the main altarpiece of which is considered to be one of the most important piece of ceramics in Spain and Portugal. It dates from 1518.
The nearby mountains are perfect for those who wish to enjoy nature in all her splendour. Indeed, they offer a marvellous vantage point from which to take in the magnificent surrounding scenery as you go for a walk. For hunting enthusiasts the local woods are a hive of activity for big game hunters.
Fishing enthusiasts will find this the ideal place for their favourite sport, given that the Tentudía reservoir nearby abounds in carp and tench.
Lastly, if its something different you're after and you like traditional culture, you could do no better than visiting the town during the Virgen de Tentudía fiestas in September. -
