Located in the northwest of the province of Cáceres its imposing castle is one of the town's symbols.
The nearby Tagus river has been a key factor in the settling of pre-historic peoples in this area. Indeed, since the Early Stone Age to date, different cultures, such as the Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians have all settled here.
Roman tombstones that have come down to us today attest to the presence of this culture in Belvís de Monroy. The castle, one of the town's symbols dates from a later period, the Middle Ages to be exact. In spite of wars and historical transformations which the town has undergone, the castle is still in perfect condition to this day. Another monument worth a visit is the town's jurisdictional stone column, standing in the central axis of the main square, this is a feudal symbol, as well as being emblematic of the granting to Belvís of the category of "villa".
There are several religious buildings worth a visit in this town, such as: the convent, the chapel, "la hernera", the church of Santiago Apóstol and the church of San Bernardo, patron saint of the town.
For those interested in history, a visit to the Belvís de Monroy Campo Arañuelo local history and culture interpretation centre is well worth a visit if you want to learn more about the district's past. -
