Badajoz celebrates its foundation as a city in a very special way: with a big culture fest for all ages.
One of the most peculiar of Extremadura's cultural celebrations is the "Almossassa Batalyaws", which means the foundation of Badajoz in ancient Arabic, and is precisely the subject matter of this event every autumn. Declared a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
The Moorish foundation of the city of Badajoz is remembered from the end of September to the beginning of October every year as the streets are filled with colour and spectacle. All types of entertaining activities are held there: parades, conferences, exhibitions, guided visits, concerts and activities for young and old alike.
Nevertheless, the main and most spectacular event is perhaps the recreation of the founding of the city, in the course of which the historical character, Ibn Marwan, the city founder, is represented entering its streets with his troops to the rhythm of their bands.
Another big attraction is the "zoco" or Moorish market where dozens of "jaima" tent vendors sell materials, spices, fruits, perfumes, teas, rugs, etc. Moreover, city streets are filled with poets, water sellers, crockery sellers and even sensual dancers.
This is without a doubt a special fiesta that preserves the historic legacy left by the kingdom of Badajoz. -
