The wetland that forms this SPA located in the centre-west of the province of Cáceres encompasses a long list of towns and villages, including Acehúche, Alcántara, Cáceres, Cachorrilla, Cañaveral, Casas de Millán, Casillas de Coria, Ceclavín, Coria, Garrovillas, Hinojal, Monroy, Moraleja, Pescueza, Portaje, Portezuelo, Santiago del Campo, Serradilla, Talaván, Torrejón el Rubio, Toril, Trujillo and Zarza la Mayor.
Some of the more notable species you can find amidst the riverbank vegetation and riparian forests are Mediterranean turtles, with regard to reptiles. Outstanding from amongst the fish, meanwhile, are the pardilla (iberochondrostoma lemmingii), the Iberian barbel, the Languedoc stone loach and the boga (leporinus obtusidens). As far as birds are concerned, birds of prey are at the top of the list, such as griffon vultures, Bonelli's eagles and Egyptian vultures, but this wetland also offers shelter to black storks and large concentrations of lesser black-backed gulls and black-headed gulls.
