    Throughout history, this Cáceres town has been home to many cultures that have all left their mark here. But the most notable event in its history was the creation of the Royal Livestock Trail that runs through the area.

    Abadía stands in the very heart of the Ambroz Valley and has been settled since Prehistoric times. It was later occupied by the Berbers during Roman times and then by the Cistercian Order before finally being taken over by the Seigniory of Granadilla. </span>

    The abbey of Santa María de Sotofermoso bears testimony to this transition, which was turned into a palace and recreational area for kings and nobility of the period. Known as the Palace and Gardens of Sotofermoso or of the Duke, it is the most interesting place to visit in the area. </span>

    But the most significant milestone in the history of this Cáceres town was the creation of the Cañada Real (Royal Livestock Trail) that runs through the area and is still used today.</span>

    To really experience the heart and soul of this town and mingle with its people, the best time to come is during the Santo Domingo de Guzmán celebrations, the patron saint of Abadía, or for the El Santo Cristo de la Bien Parada procession.

    Finally, for a fun, relaxing time, Abadía also has a natural swimming pool on the Ambroz river.
